Things to Do with Toddlers Near Balham: Our Favourite Local Spots

Balham is a genuinely lovely place to raise small children. Over the years, I've walked these streets with groups of nursery children, chatted to parents at the gate about weekend plans, and built up a pretty solid picture of what works well for toddlers in this part of south London. Here are some of our favourite local spots, whether you're looking for a muddy morning out or something a little more contained on a grey Tuesday.

Tooting Bec Common

This is probably where we'd start. Tooting Bec Common is a short walk or bus ride from Balham and it's brilliant for young children. There's genuine space to run, wide paths for scooters, and enough interesting terrain to keep curious two and three year olds occupied for a good hour or two.

We've taken children from the nursery on walks nearby, and one of the things we notice is how much toddlers get from simply being in open green space. They slow down, they investigate, they find things. A stick, a puddle, a bird. It doesn't need to be structured.

The lido at Tooting Bec is also worth knowing about for warmer months, one of the largest open-air pools in the UK and popular with families.

Balham Library

We actually walk the children to Balham Library as part of our regular outings from Little Starlings Nursery, so I can say from experience that it's a warm, welcoming space. The children's section is well stocked, and the library runs regular storytime sessions for young children.

For parents doing their own visits, it's a genuinely useful free resource, especially on rainy days when you need somewhere calm and purposeful to go with a toddler who has already dismantled the living room.

Clapham Common

A little further north but easily reachable, Clapham Common has a good playground, plenty of open grass, and the kind of scale that means you can vary your route each time. The bandstand area is popular with families at weekends.

Clapham South tube is just a few stops up the Northern line from Balham, so it's a straightforward outing even with a pushchair.

Streatham Common and the Rookery

Heading south, Streatham Common is well worth the trip. The Rookery, the formal garden at the top of the common, is a lovely place to walk with small children, there are paths, flowers, and usually something in bloom. It's quieter than some of the more well-known commons and feels like a bit of a hidden spot.

The café at the Rookery is good too, which matters when you're out with a toddler and everyone needs a snack.

Wandsworth Park

Wandsworth Park sits alongside the Thames and has a solid children's playground. It's a calm, well-maintained space and the river backdrop makes it feel a bit special. Good for slightly longer outings when you want to combine a walk with some active play.

Balham Farmers' Market

Running on Saturday mornings, the Balham Farmers' Market on Bedford Hill is a low-key and genuinely enjoyable outing with toddlers. It's not overwhelming in scale, there's usually something good to eat, and the sensory experience of a market, different smells, textures, sounds, is actually brilliant for young children even if they can't articulate why.

We talk a lot in early years about everyday experiences being rich learning opportunities. A market is a perfect example.

Staying Active at Home: What We'd Suggest

On the days when getting out feels like too much, a few things tend to work well with toddlers:

• Den building with cushions and blankets
• Playdough (homemade is easy and cheap)
• Pouring and filling activities with water in the kitchen sink or a washing up bowl
• Looking at books together, not just reading them, but talking about the pictures
• Simple baking, even very young children can stir and pour

These are the kinds of activities we weave into our days at nursery too. Messy play, sensory exploration, hands-on making. They don't need to be complicated to be valuable.

A Note on Getting Out Whatever the Weather

At Little Starlings we take children outside every day, in all weathers when it's safe to do so. We find that children are much more resilient to rain and cold than parents sometimes expect, and that outdoor time makes a real difference to mood and behaviour for the rest of the day. A good waterproof and some wellies go a long way.

If you're in the habit of going out with your toddler regardless of the forecast, you'll find Balham and the surrounding area gives you plenty of options year round.
