Morning Routines That Make Nursery Drop-Off Easier

The morning rush is real. Whether you're navigating the streets of Balham to get to work or juggling multiple children before drop-off, a chaotic start can set a difficult tone for the whole day. Over the years at Little Starlings Nursery, we've noticed that children who arrive calm and settled tend to have smoother transitions into their day with us. Here's what we've learned works.

Start the night before

The best mornings are built in the evening. Lay out clothes the night before so there's no debate about what your child is wearing. Pack bags with spare clothes, nappies, and anything else you'll need. If your child attends nursery in Balham, having everything ready means you're not searching for shoes at 8.45am.

Consider a simple bedtime routine too. Children who sleep well wake up more cooperative, which makes the entire morning flow better.

Wake up with time to spare

This might sound obvious, but many parents underestimate how long mornings actually take with young children. Building in an extra 10 or 15 minutes means you're not perpetually rushing. Your child picks up on your stress, and when you're calm, they're more likely to be cooperative about getting dressed and eating breakfast.

Create a visual routine chart

Young children respond well to knowing what comes next. A simple picture chart showing breakfast, getting dressed, brushing teeth, and putting on shoes helps children understand the sequence and feel more in control. You could even let them tick off each step as they go.

Make it about connection, not just tasks

Instead of barking orders, try involving your child in the routine. Let them choose between two breakfast options. Ask them to help find their shoes. Sing a song while getting dressed. These small moments of connection make the morning feel less like a battle and more like time together, even if it's just ten minutes.

Keep breakfast simple and nourishing

Skip the elaborate cooked breakfast on a weekday. Porridge, toast with nut butter, yoghurt with fruit, or cereal all work well. The goal is something that keeps them satisfied until mid-morning snack time at nursery, not perfection.

Have a goodbye ritual

When you arrive at our nursery on Endlesham Road in Balham, a consistent goodbye helps your child feel secure. It might be two kisses and a wave, or saying "I'll pick you up after snack time." Keep it brief but warm. Children sense when parents are anxious about separating, so a confident, cheerful goodbye actually helps them settle faster.

Expect resistance, stay patient

Some mornings will still be difficult, and that's completely normal. Your child might refuse to get in their coat or have a meltdown about breakfast. These moments pass. Stay calm, validate their feelings, and gently keep moving forward.

The difference it makes

When children arrive at Little Starlings Nursery unhurried and settled, they're ready to play, learn, and enjoy their day. A calmer morning routine isn't about being perfect, it's about creating space for connection and reducing unnecessary stress for everyone.
