Green Spaces Near Balham: The Best Parks and Outdoor Activities for Young Children
3 March 2026

Living in Balham means having access to some brilliant outdoor spaces, and as parents, we know how important it is to get little ones outside for fresh air and play. Whether you're looking for a morning adventure before nursery or weekend family time, there are several lovely parks and green areas right here in SW12 that are perfect for young children.
Balham Recreation Ground
Just a short walk from our nursery on Endlesham Road, Balham Recreation Ground is a real gem. It's got plenty of space for toddlers and pre-schoolers to run around safely, with open grass areas ideal for younger children who are still finding their confidence. There's a playground with age-appropriate equipment, and on sunny days, it's a lovely spot for a picnic or a simple play session.
The open layout means you can keep a close eye on your little ones whilst they explore. Many Balham families make this their go-to spot for afternoon play, and you'll often spot other local children making the most of the space.
Tooting Bec Common and Tooting Bec Lido
Heading slightly further afield into SW17, Tooting Bec Common is a larger green space with plenty to offer families. It's got playgrounds, open grassland, and ponds that children find endlessly fascinating. The common also hosts the famous Tooting Bec Lido, which operates seasonally and is perfect for families wanting a splash about during warmer months.
The playground here is more extensive than many local parks, making it great for children of varying ages. Even toddlers enjoy the gentle grass areas and watching the ducks.
Wandsworth Park
If you're happy to take a short bus ride from Balham, Wandsworth Park is absolutely worth the journey. Right on the riverside, it's a wonderful space for a family outing. There's a playground, plenty of open space, and the added interest of watching the Thames and spotting river life. It's particularly lovely for a longer expedition if you've got the time at weekends.
Clapham Common
Slightly further along but accessible by bus, Clapham Common is one of South London's most popular green spaces. With three separate ponds, multiple playgrounds, and vast open areas, there's something for every age. The playgrounds cater well to younger children, and the common itself is perfect for simple outdoor play.
On weekends, Clapham Common buzzes with families, and you'll find plenty of other parents and children about.
Getting Outside in SW12
One thing we love about working with families in Balham is how close everything is. Whether it's a quick visit to Balham Recreation Ground for 20 minutes before home time or a more ambitious weekend trip to one of the larger commons, there's genuine outdoor space on your doorstep.
Regular outdoor play helps children develop confidence, burn energy, and develop an appreciation for nature. Even short visits to local parks have a positive impact on wellbeing and behaviour.
